  1. Welcome to Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.0 for Macintosh
  2. =================================================

  4. Adobe(TM) Acrobat(TM) software gives you instant access to documents in
  5. their original form, independent of computer platform. With the Acrobat
  6. Reader, you can view, navigate, print and present any Portable Document
  7. Format (PDF) file. 
  8.  
  9. This Read Me file contains last minute installation instructions and
  10. product information for the Acrobat Reader program. The On-line Guide
  11. (Acrobat(TM) Reader Help) also provides essential information to help
  12. you begin using Acrobat Reader 2.0.

  14. Installing Acrobat Reader
  15. =========================
  16.  
  17. Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 addresses installation issues related to different
  18. versions of Adobe Type Manager by updating any existing system-level ATM
  19. older than version 3.8.1. It includes changes to the installer only -
  20. there is no change to the application itself. 
  21.  
  22.  o To install Acrobat Reader 2.0 on your hard drive, double click on the
  23.    file called "AcroRead.mac" and then follow the instructions on your
  24.    screen. 
  25.  
  26.  o If no version of system-level Adobe Type Manager is present on your
  27.    system at the time of installation, ATM(TM) LE (a special version of
  28.    Adobe Type Manager 3.8.1) is installed with Acrobat Reader 2.0 for
  29.    use by Acrobat only. ATM LE is placed in the Fonts folder within the
  30.    Adobe Acrobat 2.0 folder. If ATM is present in the System, the
  31.    installer installs ATM LE as described (for backup purposes) and
  32.    updates system ATM as described below. The ATM Font Database
  33.    (required by Acrobat 2.0) is always installed loose the System
  34.    folder.

  36.  o Acrobat Reader 2.0 requires either ATM version 3.6 or above (not
  37.    included) at the System level or ATM LE (included) to be installed in
  38.    order to run. 
  39.  
  40.  o Acrobat Reader 2.0r3 addresses installation issues related to
  41.    different versions of Adobe Type Manager by updating most existing
  42.    system-level ATM or SuperATM older than version 3.8.1. It will not
  43.    update ATM GX (ATM 3.7), ATM 3.5.1J or ATM 3.8 (on Power Macintosh,
  44.    Kanji, or active QuickDraw GX systems) -- see next item. 
  45.  
  46.  o Please note that to enable Acrobat Reader 2.0 and ATM LE to fit on a
  47.    single floppy, ATM LE does not include support for QuickDraw GX,
  48.    Kanji, or 68000-based Macintoshes, and does not have native Power
  49.    Macintosh code for improved performance on Power Macintoshes like the
  50.    full version of ATM 3.8.1 (which is included with Acrobat Exchange
  51.    2.0). Please call 800-83-FONTS (800-833-6687) for information on an
  52.    upgrade to ATM 3.8.1 or Acrobat Exchange 2.0.

  54.  o Acrobat Reader 2.0 is not compatible with QuickDraw GX. You will need
  55.    to disable the ATM GX control panel and the QuickDraw GX extension.
  56.    You can use Extensions Manager from the Control Panel to do this, or
  57.    remove these files from their locations. See the Troubleshooting
  58.    section below for more information on QuickDraw GX issues. 
  59.  
  60.  o ATM LE allocates approximately 576K of RAM from Multi-Finder memory
  61.    when it is initialized by Acrobat Reader. If Virtual memory is on,
  62.    ATM LE cannot use Multi-Finder memory, so an additional 576K memory
  63.    must be allocated to Acrobat Reader.

  65. System Requirements

  68.  o Macintosh computer with 68020 (Macintosh II series) or greater
  69.    processor 
  70.  o MacOS 7.0 or greater 
  71.  o 2 MB application RAM 
  72.  o 4 MB hard disk space 
  73.  o FDHD floppy disk drive or CD-ROM player if installing from physical
  74.    media 
  75.  o Acrobat Reader 2.0 is not compatible with QuickDraw GX

  77. Troubleshooting
  78. ===============

  80. If you experience problems with installation, consider the following: 
  81.  
  82.  o If you downloaded the Reader from an online service or internet site,
  83.    check that the file transferred properly. The binhexed version of the
  84.    Macintosh 2.0 Reader self-extracting archive is exactly 1754865
  85.    bytes. Corrupted archives have been reported to issue a message
  86.    "requires 68020 or greater processor to run" on Macintosh IIX
  87.    systems.

  89.  o If you have previously installed QuickDraw GX and then deinstalled or
  90.    deactivated it, you may need to reinstall Type 1 fonts. 
  91.  
  92.  o The correct process for restoring your original Type 1 font
  93.    configuration may depend on which version of the GX Enabler you
  94.    received. 
  95.     o The QuickDraw GX installer shipped with System 7.5 places Type 1
  96.       fonts in a folder called Archived Type 1 fonts. Deinstalling
  97.       QuickDraw GX does not reinstall these fonts in the Fonts folder. 
  98.     o Subsequent versions may treat outline fonts differently.
